Fr. Agnel Balbhavan was founded on 9th June, 1957 in the Land’s End neighbourhood of Bandra, a suburb of Mumbai, by late Rev. Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues, a member of The Society of the Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier, Pilar, Goa. It was named after Ven. Fr. Agnel, a member of the Society who had passed away in the odour of sanctity in 1927.
The aim was to shelter and educate orphans and destitute children of all castes, creeds and communities. Its inception was anchored in ambitions like fostering love and understanding among the various communities of India, along with contributing to the development of our motherland and its people.
It had a humble beginning with a small shrine of Ven. Fr. Agnel, an orphanage with 12 orphans, and a workshop to train them in the trade of carpentry. Today, we have over 800 orphan children all over India.
